Take A Memolets you dictate, store, retrieve, and review memos on topics you define -- all without touching the keyboard! Simply launch Take A Memo, and a window will open, showing a list of memos (an empty list, initially). Turn on your microphone and say "Open Topic Testing" (or any topic name of your choice), and Take A Memo will ask you if you want to create a new topic by that name. Tell it "Confirm That", and Take A Memo will create a new memo with that topic name. Then simply talk, and Tablet UML will transcribe what you say into the topic file, automatically saving the file every ten seconds. Later, you can correct any transcription errors and export to any word processor or other text editor.

But that's not all! Take A Memo supports the following additional voice commands:

  • Open Topic Topic Name: Opens the named topic. If the topic doesn’t exist, you can create it by saying Confirm that when prompted; or you can cancel by saying Cancel that.
  • List Topics: Lists the available topics, one at a time.
  • Next Topic: List the next topic.
  • Open That: Open the current topic in the list, and stop listing.
  • Read to me Percentage: Reads back the most recent text, by percentage of the whole. Percentage must be: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100.
  • Close Topic: Closes the active topic.
  • Save Topic: Saves the active topic. Note that the active topic is automatically saved every 10 seconds.

Take A Memo is perfect for people who need to take notes while keeping their hands free: laboratory workers, reporters, field scientists, and others. It's also just good for busy people who don't want to bother with the keyboard as they put their thoughts into words.

Take A Memo is only for Tablet PCs and other computers with Microsoft Speech API (SAPI) 5.0 or later, which is installed on all Tablet PCs and most machines with Microsoft Office® 2002 or later installed. It performs significantly better if you work through the Microsoft speech training exercises on your computer.

So why is The Tablet UML Company offering you these tools absolutely free? Are we going to collect your email address and inundate you with spam? Nope! The Tablet UML Company would never do that. Are we going to secretly track your Web surfing habits? Nope! The Tablet UML Company would never do that, either. Are we going to dump ads on your system? Nope! The Tablet UML Company hates clutter as much as you do. Are we going to install some adware or spyware and generate revenue by forcing you to see ads? Nope! The Tablet UML Company hates adware, after a particularly nasty infection we had. Are these "demo" or "trial" versions, and we're going to charge you for them later? Nope! WhenThe Tablet UML Company says free, we mean free.

So why free stuff from The Tablet UML Company? Simple: we're trying to sell our new UML tool for the Tablet PC, Tablet UML. And to do that, we need visibility. That means we need traffic to the Tablet UML site. And one way to generate traffic is to give stuff away for free. If a lot of people come and download these tools, at least some of them will be software developers and analysts; and they may be interested in Tablet UML. So we hope they'll browse the rest of the site after downloading the free tools.

But that does mean one important thing: these tools are provided byThe Tablet UML Company as is. We're not making any money off them (that's what Tablet UML is for), so we can't afford to answer questions about them. We've made a good faith effort to make them install and run properly. And we'll upload fixes when we get a chance, so you can always download the latest versions. But if they don't do the functions that you need, well, we just can't do anything about that. (Maybe when Tablet UML starts making us lots of money, we'll be able to afford to support these more fully.)
