In an activity diagram, a swimlane represents an area of responsibility within the diagram. Swimlanes might represent objects, people, components, interfaces, business units, or any other entity that can do work or store information. All activities within a swimlane are the responsibility of the corresponding entity.
Swimlanes can be edited via their Detail Pages. Besides the usual Detail Page controls, the Detail Page for a swimlane contains a Type dropdown box:

You can either enter a type name for the swimlane or select it from the dropdown list.
