In UML, an attribute in a classifier is a data value that describes a given instance of the classifier. The attributes appear in a compartment under the classifier name compartment and above the operations compartment:

In an activity diagram, a classifier can be assigned to a swimlane. In a sequence diagram or a collaboration diagram, a classifier can be assigned to an object. And then from the swimlane context menu or the object context menu, you can select Create Attributes... or Create Operations.... When you do, the Member Creation Dialog will appear:
This dialog will make candidate attributes or operations from the following dialog elements:
Check the box in front of the candidate attributes or operations that you wish to create, and click OK to add them to the classifier for the selected swimlane or object. You can also click Check All to check the box in front of all candidate attributes or operations, or click Uncheck All to clear the box in front of all candidate attributes or operations.
